Best Time to Visit
- October to March is generally comfortable for most Karnataka travel, including sightseeing, pilgrimage journeys, wildlife stays and road trips.
- April to June is warmer across many parts of the state, while Coorg, Chikmagalur and other hill regions remain popular.
- July to September brings the monsoon to the Western Ghats and Malnad region. Waterfalls and landscapes are particularly attractive during this period, although heavy rainfall can affect outdoor sightseeing and driving times.
- Mysuru Dasara, major temple festivals and long weekends can see higher demand for accommodation and transport.
Travel Within Karnataka
- Karnataka can be explored by road, rail and air depending on the route.
- Road travel is particularly useful for journeys combining temple towns, hill regions, wildlife destinations and heritage sites. A car with driver gives families greater flexibility for sightseeing, stops and local travel.
- For longer journeys, travellers can reach a suitable gateway by flight or train and continue by road.
Temple Travel in Karnataka
Karnataka’s important pilgrimage destinations are spread across the coastal, Malnad and Western Ghats regions.
Major temple destinations include:
Dharmasthala • Kukke Subramanya • Udupi • Sringeri • Horanadu • Kollur Mookambika • Murudeshwar • Gokarna
Temple journeys are best planned around opening hours, darshan time and realistic driving distances, particularly when travelling through the Western Ghats.
Wildlife Travel in Karnataka
- Kabini, Nagarhole and Bandipur are among Karnataka's important wildlife regions and can be conveniently combined with Mysuru and other South Karnataka journeys.
- Wildlife stays are better planned with sufficient time for the destination and safari rather than as quick sightseeing stops.
- Safari timings, availability and seasonal conditions should be checked in advance, particularly during weekends and holiday periods.
Family & Senior Traveller Notes
- Karnataka is well suited to family travel, but the itinerary should take account of the distances between regions.
- For families travelling with senior citizens or children, consider driving time, walking requirements, temple timings, meal breaks, hotel location and sufficient rest between longer journeys.
- Hill and ghat-road travel should also be considered when planning journeys through Coorg, Chikmagalur and the Western Ghats.
